The sub-series includes duplicate copies of baptism, confirmation, marriage and burial records. Original records (with some exceptions) are maintained at the Parish or mission where the sacrament was received. Parishes and mission make copies annually and send them to the Archives to serve as a back-up copy. These records cannot serve as an authorative copy as they may not contain all the annotations found in the original registers - therefore they may be used for geneological purposes but not canonical purposes.
The sub-series also includes original baptismal registers for three hosptials which operated in Edmonton: The Misericordia Hospital, The Edmonton General Hospital, and Camsell Hospital.
There are also several indexes available for these records. An alphabetical index arranged by parish exists for all baptismal records created prior to 1965. Index cards (arranged alphabetically) were created for Baptismal records between 1965-1982. From 1982 to the present Baptismal records are maintained in the CANSTAT database. There is also an index to the Misericordia Hospital Baptismal Registers. There are no indexes for confirmation, marriage or burial records.
In addition the subseries contains 14 bound confirmation registers dating between 1912-1957. These are original registers. From 1958-2012 confirmation records were not kept in registers. Parishes made lists and sent duplicate copies to the Archdiocese. Unfortunately many parishes did not maintain their confirmation records. Thus these lists serve in many cases as the "original" record.
