Carleton, Rt. Rev. William Burke

Msgr. William Burke Francis was born on August 17, 1883, in Ottawa. He did his theological studies at St. John’s Theological College, Brighton, MA, and was ordained in Ottawa on October 15, 1911. He worked in the Ottawa Archdiocese for 11 years before coming to Edmonton in August 1921.

His first appointment was a Rector at St. Anthony’s Pro-Cathedral, 1921-1939. He then worked as Vicar General, 1938-1939 and 1945-1965; Army Chaplain, 1939-1942; Rector of St. Joseph’s Cathedral, 1942-1945. From 1921 to 1931, he gave a fine service to the City of Edmonton as Juvenile Court Magistrate.

Msgr. Burke was appointed Chaplain of the Precious Blood Monastery in Edmonton in 1957 and went in residence at St. Joseph’s Hospital, in August 1961.

He was made Domestic Prelate in November 1930 and Protonotary Apostolic in May 1949. He died in Edmonton on February 18, 1965 and was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Crough, Rev. Emmett

Father Emmett Crough was born in Calgary on December 23, 1927. He did his Theological Studies at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Edmonton, 1952-1956, and was ordained by Archbishop Anthony Jordan, o. m. i., Coadjutor for Edmonton, on June 8, 1956. He died at his home in Norman Wells, NWT, on January 25, 2006.

He served as full time Assistant Chancellor, 1956-1958; assistant at St. Agnes Parish, Edmonton and Director of City Cemeteries, 1958-1962; bursar at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Edmonton, 1962-1964; Director of Catholic Information Centre, Edmonton, July-December 1964; Assistant at St. Michael’s Parish, Edmonton, and Assistant Chancellor, 1964-1965; Pastor at Villeneuve and administrator at Riviere Qui Barre, 1965-1966; Administrator at St. Michael-Resurrection Parish, Edmonton, 1966-1968; Pastor at St. Michael-Resurrection, Edmonton, 1968-1971; Pastor at St. Matthew’s Parish, Edmonton, 1971-1973; on leave of study at St. Paul’s University, Ottawa, 1973-1975; Pastor at Mundare and Skaro, 1975-1980; Pastor at Sacred Heart Parish, Edmonton, and Director of Catholic Information Centre, 1980-1986; Pastor of Holy Family Parish, St. Albert, 1986-1988; leave of study on Pastoral Care in Edmonton, 1988-1989; Pastor of St. Anthony’s Parish, Edmonton, and assuming chaplaincy to the University Hospital, 1989-1999; Pastor of St. Anthony’s and St. Agnes Parishes, 1999-2000; full time Chaplain with responsibilities at University of Alberta hospital and the Grey Nuns Hospital, August 2000-August 2001. In 2001, he agreed to assist in pastoral ministry in the Archdiocese of Grouard-McLennan, being appointed to Manning in 2001, Slave Lake in 2002 and Norman Wells in 2003.

Koolen, Rev. Francis

Rev. Francis Peter Koolen was born on Aug. 21 1881 in Holland. He completed his theological studies in Holland with the Sacred Heart Fathers and was ordained into the priesthood on May 17, 1913. Shortly after in 1914 Rev. Koolen immigrated to Canada and served in many small missions inlcuding Prauge, Holden, Tofield, Ryle, Clyde, Newtow, Westlock, Dapp, Tawatinaw, Rochestre, Perryvale, Meanook, Mosside, Barrhead and Vimy. Rev. Koolen served as chaplin at St. Joseph's hospital in Radway and he also served as pastor at St. Edmund's parish in Edmonton. He passed away on January 10, 1956 and was burried in St. Joachim Cemetrey in Edmonton on Friday January 13, 1956.

Reynolds, Rt. Rev. Allen

Msgr. Allen Reynolds was born in Toronto, Ontario, on February 27, 1912, and passed away in Edmonton, Alberta, on October 29, 2007.
His family lived in western Canada for a number of years and then moved to Antigonish, Nova Scotia, where Msgr. Reynolds was educated at Morrison School and then attended St. Francis Xavier University. Reynolds graduated Summa Cum Laude before entering Holy Heart Seminary in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In June 24, 1936 Msgr. Reynolds was ordained to priesthood by Bishop P. A. Bray, for the Archdiocese of Edmonton and soon traveled west to help meet the growing demand for priests in Western Canada.
Msgr. Reynolds was appointed as the Assistant Rector at St. Joseph Basilica, a post he held for nearly twenty years. During this time Msgr. Reynolds studied education at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, and taught half-days at St. Joseph’s High School (1936-1955). Between 1946 and 1948 Reynolds was a professor of English at St. Joseph Seminary and its Vice-Chancellor.
Msgr. Reynolds worked in many parishes in the Archdiocese of Edmonton in several capacities. He was Pastor at Trochu (1955-1957), Pastor at St. Edmund’s Parish, Edmonton (1957-1960), Administrator of Sacred Heart Parish, Edmonton (1960-1963), Pastor at Sacred Heart Parish (1963-1970), Pastor at Sacred Heart Parish, Red Deer (1970-1981), Pastor at St. Anthony’s Parish, Edmonton (1981-1987). After fifty years of service in the diocese he retired in Camrose in 1987.
In addition to his priestly duties, Msgr. Reynolds worked with the Legion of Mary and was diocesan Chaplain of the Catholic Women’s League for many years. He was also active with the Boy Scouts of Canada, the Girl Guilds of Canada, and the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Edmonton as a Chaplain and cultivated relationships with various summer camps including Our Lady of Victory Camp at Sylvan Lake.
In December 1985, he was named Prelate of Honour by Pope John Paul II, and given the title Monsignor. 1996 he celebrated his diamond jubilee at St. Joseph Basilica. In 2006 Reynolds received the Governor Generals Caring Canadian Award, and celebrated the 70th anniversary of his ordination.

Wetherhill, John

John Wetherhill was born on September 18, 1932 in Birmingham England. He served as pipe organist at St. Joseph's Basilica for 38 years. In addition to his passion for music Wetherhill was an avid photographer who diligently photographed all the parishes and mission in the Catholic Archdiocese.

Purcell, Rev. Edward
Pessoa · 1917-2000

Edward Francis Purcell was born on December 30, 1917 in Antigonish, NS to Alexander Purcell and Mary Ellen MacKenzie. He attended St. Joseph Seminary in Edmonton from 1944-1948 and was ordained to the priesthood on May 23, 1948 at Ninian's Cathedral in Antigonish by Archbishop MacDonald (who was coadjutor at the time).

Rev. Purcell served many parish communities in Alberta including Tofield, Clandonald, Dewberry, Derwent, Innisfail, Vermillion, Prague, Irma and Viking. He also served as parish priest for both St. Paul and St. Patrick parishes in Edmonton. During this time he oversaw the construction and renovation of many parishes.

Rev. Purcell was also a military chaplain serving during World War II for just over three years. After the war he continued to work as a Chaplain serving veterans in the communities where he was serving as priest. When he retired from full-time pastoral ministry in 2000 he continued to serve as Chaplain at Mewburn Veterans Hospital and part-time chaplain to the Kingsway Royal Canadian Legion.

Rev. Purcell died on May 10, 2000. His funeral was celebrated at St. Joseph's Basilica in Edmonton on May 15, 2000. He was buried in his family plot in the Antigonish cemetery.

Britton, Rev. Robert

Rev. Robert Britton was born on August 21, 1919 in Roodhius, Friesland, the Netherlands to Garben Bruinsma and Suzanna Flapper. He was ordained on May 14, 1932 in St. Francis Church, Toronto for Edmonton by Archbishop Henry Joseph O’Leary of Edmonton. After his ordination he served as Assistant Pastor at St. Joseph's Cathedral (1932-1933), Pastor at St. Theresa' Parish in Rosedale (1948-1957), as Pastor at the newly built St. Clare's Parish in Edmonton (1957-1961).

In addition to his ministry at Parishes Rev. Britton was the Editor and Business Manager at the Western Catholic from 1932-1949, the Director of Catholic Truth Broadcast with CFRN radio from 1936-1944. In addition he served as the Press Officer for the Catholic Social Services in 1956.

Rev. Britton retired in 1971 and died on Aug. 10, 1975. He was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery on August 14, 1975
