Relic of St. Charbel

This relic was presented to Archbishop Smith on Nov. 28, 2015 at the Mass of Peace in the Middle East by the Maronite Catholic Community in Edmonton. It is on permanent display in the St. Francis de Sales chapel at the Pastoral and Administrative Offices (PAO).

The series consists of 1st, 2nd and 3rd class relics held in the possession of the Archdiocese of Edmonton. The majority of these relics are housed in special containers called "Thecas". The series also includes several ornate reliquaries. About half of the relics include authentication papers, see item level descriptions for more details. In addition the series contains authentication papers for relics which are not in the collection.

Note about the dates: Whereever possible the theca are dated as the date they were created (not the date that the relic was created).

Religious Brothers Files

The sub-series consists of records that document the relationship between the Archdiocese and the various communities of religious brothers that have been active in ministry in the Archdiocese and consists primarily of correspondence of an administrative nature about the various ministries the priests are active in (such as schools, as chaplains, service at parishes, etc). In addition the records contain information about individual priests including information about their education, positions in the church, and active ministries.

Reliquary House with Relics

Item is an example of a reliquary house, which contains three thecas with several relics of different Saint. The first theca, on the left, includes a piece of bone of St.Francis de Sales, a piece of bone of St.Peter and St.Paul,and a piece of bone of St. Benedict Joseph Labre. The second theca includes a piece of bone of St.Joseph spouse of Mary, a piece of bone of St.Ann mother of Mary, a piece of tomb of Mary, a piece of bone of St.Joachim father of Mary, and a piece of bone of St. John the Baptist. The third theca includes a piece of cincure of St. Francis of Assisi, a piece of cloth of St.Francis of Assisi, and a piece of bone of St.Joseph of Cupertino. Relics are either 1st class or 2nd. The thecas are tied down to the velvet pillow holding them up. Seal of office is not viewable presumed present.

The reliquary is designed in a neo-gothic style. Each theca is a different size. The first is oval 4cm on 3.5 cm , next one is roundish 8 cm in diameter with very dull points, the last one is oval 3.5cm on 3cm.

Item is an example of a reliquary set which is ready to be used. Currently the reliquary contains no relics. It is brass in colour and has four segments, the base which is round and plain having a diameter of 18 cm, the stem has 4 slots for jewels, the landing holds the thece, the last part it is steeple-like in appearance with two smaller steeples on its side.

Item is an example of a reliquary containing 7 relics of the following saints: a piece of the tomb of Christ, a piece of "Grotte de l'Agoni" the grotto of the Agony, piece of "...de la Ste. Vierge" either the tomb or home of Mary, and a "P. du. Calvaire" piece from Calvary.

The identification of the relics is written in French rather than in Latin which is traditional and proper.
