Aherne, Rev. John

Father John Joseph Aherne was born on August 15, 1900 in Ireland. He studied theology in Switzerland and Edmonton before being ordained to the priesthood on December 21, 1927 at the Seminary Chapel in Edmonton by Archbishop O'Leary.

Father Aherne served as the assistant pastor in Galahad, Alliance, Wanda and Forestburg, Castor, Bulwark, Coronation, Foreman, Gadbsy and Halkrik in 1928 before being appointed Pastor of Big Valley in 1928. In 1956 Father Aherne was appointed pastor in Rimbey where he served until his death on December 9, 1959. He is buried in Rimbey.

Baker, Rev. Augustine

Rev. Augustine George Baker was born on Oct. 15, 1938 in New Victoria, Nova Scotia to George and Doris Baker.

He entered theological studies at St. Joseph Seminary in 1960 and was ordained on May 23, 1964 at St. Ninian's Cathedral in Antogonish, Nova Scotia by Bishop William Power for the Archdiocese of Edmonton.

During his ministry in Edmonton he served at St. Angela's Parish (1964-1967), Immaculate Heart Parish (1967-1968), St. Francis Xavier Parish in Camrose (1968-1970), St. Michael Resurrection Parish (1970-1974) and the missions of Calmar, Devon, Nisku and Leduc (1974-1976).

In 1976 he left for a year of sabbatical to study in Calgary. Shortly after he left ministry and requested a formal laicization. He was married in Nova Scotia in 1983.

Connolly, Rev. Frederick

Rev. Frederick G. Connolly was born on the 31th of January 1906 in St. John, New Brunswick to James Connolly and Margaret Hardy. He obtained his theological education at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Edmonton between 1927 and 1930 and was ordained on September 21, 1930 at the St. Joseph’s Cathedral by Archbishop Henry Joseph O’Leary for ministry in the Archdiocese of Edmonton.

After he was ordained Rev. Connolly completed post-graduate education in Rome (1930-1932) and was then appointed the position of Professor of Philosophy, Ascetics and Apologetics at St. Joseph Seminary (1932-1949). We also served as the Chaplain for the Misericordia Hospital, Rosary Hall, Faithful Companions of Jesus, and the Sisters of the Precious Blood.

During his retirement Rev. Connolly assisted various parishes in Florida. Rev. Connolly died on July 6, 1978 in the Hospital at Lake Wales, Florida.

Curtis, Rev. Vincent

Rev. Vincent Curtis was born on January 27, 1914 at Trepassey in the Diocese of St. John’s, Newfoundland to John M. Curtis and Helena Waddleton. He attended St. Joseph’s Seminary in Edmonton from 1933-1937 where he obtained his theological education. He was ordained on June 13, 1937 at the Seminary Chapel in Edmonton.

During his ministry he served from 1937-1938 as Pastor at Elk Point with the missions of Heinsbury, Lindbergh, and stations at Armistice and Primrose. From 1938-1940 as Pastor at Vilna. In 1940 he served as short term replacement at Winfield during Fr. Dillon’s sickness. From 1940-1941 he was the Assistant Pastor in Castor, serving the missions of Halkirk and N&D de Savoie. From 1941-1942 he was the Assistant Pastor in Winfield serving with Breton, Yeoford, Westernose, Minihik, Pendryl and Buck Lake as missions. In 1942-1945 he was the Pastor in Winfield. From 1945-1947 he was on sick leave and traveled to Cambridge, Massachustes and Tuscon, Arizona.

He served as pastor in Arizon from 1947-1960 and was excarindated from Edmonton on Feb. 22, 1960. One week later he was incardinaed in the Diocese of El Paso Texas. For the next twenty years he served in various parishes in El Paso and San Diego.

Rev. Curtis died on June 28, 1987.
